     Together with Mr. Salum Kimosa from the “Farmers College Mkindo”, Mr. Costantine Lingonga, oversight officer in Lupiro and Elizabeth Wapalila, Ifakara branch manager, I joined the organization and implementation of the meetings and activities realized in the Lupiro area from 24-02-2013 to 6-03-2013 with YOSEFO farmers clients.

Objectives

1. To follow up the results of the Mkindo trainings and to support farmers in their activities:

• in individual clients firms
• in setting up and implementation of four demo-plot (shamba darasa)

2. To spread and improve knowledge on new techniques for rice cultivation among farmers in Lupiro area

Target people

100 farmers are concerned with these shamba darasa: 50 clients selected in 2011 and 50 new clients selected in 2012. Among those last ones, 40 of them (two groups of 20) had the chance to follow trainings in Mkindo, while the last 10, who didn’t had this chance, were invited to join the Shamba Darasa’s activities, together with the 50 farmers clients of the year 2011.

Initial budget to set up a Demo-plot

Mr. Kimosa discussed together with farmers groups the minimum budget necessary to set up and run these demo-plot for the first season. The total budget discussed and approved is Tshs 170.000,00.

For the next seasons the demo-plots will challenge to be sustainable.

Farmers were also asked to write down in details how they have spent or will spend the loans money: a first analysis of the collected papers shows different budgets with different criteria. My suggestion is that this item should be discussed again together with the farmers.

Situation of demo-plots

Two demo-plot had already started their activities as planned and with good initial results (Minepa na Kichangani), while the others two didn’t start yet because of difficulties in finding a field to rent. Still concerned farmers are ready to start the planned work.

Also activities implemented in individual clients farms were satisfactory.

Activities attendance

A total of 69 farmers (within 100) attended the ten days activities. The attendance is acceptable, considering the big distances from farmers houses and fields. The attendance was higher for farmers trained in Mkindo:

The last meeting was attended by 50 YOSEFO clients, but many other new farmers joined the meeting because they were interested.

Methodology

During the meetings, farmers were divided into small groups, each group formed by some members who went to the Mkindo trainings with some who didn’t go: the firsts were asked to explain the seconds about various items: work plan, the AESA, the meaning of IPPM and FP, etc. If needed, they were encouraged to ask questions to the teacher and the discussion was often very lively and interactive.

The farmers trained in Mkindo also showed the others how to prepare bio-hormone and bio-fertilizer. Formerly they had prepared all the necessary ingredients and tools needed and they were able to run this activity with competence and enthusiasm.

Farmers from Mavimba, sharing at the moment the same demo-plot with farmers from Minepa, after the final meeting expressed the wish of setting up their own demo-plot.

Questionaire

At the end of the last meeting, farmers were asked to fill up a questionnaire. The results will be communicated after relative analysis.

Conclusion

Education for farmers is a capital invested in order to:

• improve farmers self-confidence and spread the idea that farming is a profession
• improve quantity and quality of harvests
• improve the standard of farmers family life
• insure repayments of loans

Suggestion

To organize together with Mr. Kimosa a second two-weeks follow up after two month.

   Il corso è iniziato il 02/12/2013 ed è stato inaugurato dal manager di YOSEFO – Sig.ra Elizabeth Wapalila – sezione di Ifakara-

PRIMO GIORNO – 02/12/2013

• Presentazioni – Ciascun partecipante si è presentato con nome, cognome, provenienza e professione

• Elezione del Comitato Direttivo – I partecipanti hanno eletto un comitato direttivo che sovrintenderà tutte le fasi del corso, formato da: UN PRESIDENTE, UN SEGRETARIO E UN COORDINATORE DEI TEMPI

• Regolamento – Ipartecipanti hanno proposto le regole da rispettare per garantire il funzionamento del corso, per esempio:

– mantenere una buona disciplina durante il corso

– rispettare le opinioni degli altri

– spegnere i cellulari o mettere la suoneria in vibrazione

     – non presentarsi ubriachi alle lezioni, ecc.

• Risultati attesi – I partecipanti hanno concordato i risultati attesi alla fine del corso: acquisire/ampliare le conoscenze per diventare esperti agricoltori,  per migliorare la produzione e per aumentare i guadagni.

TERZO GIORNO – 04/12/2013

• Preparazione del campo per la coltivazione del riso con sistemi di irrigazione o senza – con dipendenza da acqua piovana –
• Come trapiantare le piantine:  intervalli di spazio, numero di piantine per ogni buca, età delle piantine, come preparare gli strumenti necessari da usare nel trapianto delle piantine, per esempio una corda con dei segni a misura e come trattare il campo dopo il trapianto
• Principi dell’IPPM (Integrated Pest and Production Management):
• Coltivare raccolti in buona salute
• Proteggere gli insetti amici dei contadini (difendere l’ambiente)
• Visitare il campo spesso
• Il contadino deve essere un esperto

• AESA (Agro EcoSystem Analysis) : indagine scientifica delle piante nel campo e nel complesso del loro ambiente.

QUARTO GIORNO – 05/12/2013

• Come eseguire una AESA in pratica nel campo: scegliere dieci piantine di riso e analizzarne diverse caratteristiche, p.e. altezza, numero di germogli, numero di foglioline, numero di insetti dannosi e nemici, ecc.

• Come prendere appunti e disegnare le diverse informazioni raccolte sul campo, presentarle e discuterle.
